About us and the music

t.gif (878 Byte)he band’s name "NOCTURN" was inspired by the jazz tune "Harlem Nocturn" (Earl Hagen). But we play Southern Rock – with lots of enthusiasm! "Southern Rock – what’s that?" is what we’re sometimes asked. Well, there are a lot of definitions... We see it as a genre of music that was born in the American South in the late 60s and - mostly - in the 70s. Therefore it’s a mixture of different musical influences of that region and time, played with a southern attitude: the core is Rock: driving guitar riffing, screaming leads, pumping bass, honky tonk piano, slamming drums and a roaring singer. Add Blues – the sadness, the dynamics and expression; a bit of Country - the down-to-earth feeling, being on the road, the landscape, the laid-back and relaxed feel; the heat and sweat of Texas Funk; and the jam atmosphere of Jazz. Style characteristics are a whiskey-soiled voice and twin-(or more)melodies by the players.

w.gif (958 Byte)e write and play our own original songs, but our influences are obvious if you take a look at the bands, who have been - or still are – featured in our setlists, when we add cover-tunes: Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Doc Holliday, Molly Hatchet, 38 Special, Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZTop, Warren Haynes, John Campbell, Robben Ford, Robert Johnson... we have even played together with two of these bands, Molly Hatchet and Doc Holliday.

l.gif (875 Byte)ive on stage you get an entertaining, smoking mixture of our own original material and cover tunes, with a power-driven performance by six playful rockers... our music is influenced by our idols, but we have developed our own brand of Southern Rock.
